OverviewThe Bairrada region is one of Portugal's most ancient vineyard areas; it was the only part of Lusitania that the Romans found the wine of sufficient quality to be sent back to the Imperial Court in Rome. Now, it offers traditional and modernity. The former encapsulated by baga-based reds, trodden and open fermented, whilst the new now allows international varieties to flourish here too. But whites can be notable, often based upon Bical and Maria Gomes, as well as the region representing the cradle of Portugal's sparkling wine industry.
