Fonte do Ouro

Overview

Location: Mortágua, Dão
Website address: No site

These are the “professionals†as we mentioned before. A Pythonesque bunch, using their joint expertise to make modern wines in the Dão, from Nuno Cancela’s family vineyards. Yes, this is the same Band that gives us the lively tuned Giesta Rosé. This is 100% Touriga Nacional, and the cornerstone of all the reds that they produce. Lead guitarist Nuno enchants us with his Touriga chords; the cool fresh happy riff of the Giesta Tinto, the romantically expressive Fonte do Ouro Reserva, only topped by the deep soul feel of the Fonte do Ouro Touriga Nacional.

In the background but clearly audible are the crisp vocals of Arinto and Encruzado which make up the fine Giesta Branco.

Quinta da Giesta Branco

Current Vintage: 2009

A cocktail of local varieties including the illustrious Encruzado, assembled by winemaking guru Nuno Cancela. A pithy, minerally white which works well as an aperitif but can handle most flavours up to Caesar Salad volume.

We often argue that good Dao wines should have a refreshing succulence to them, from a combination of higher vineyards and granitic soils. The red Giesta reflects this style perfectly, with medium body and a soft spiciness.

Current Vintage:

2000 - 05/04 This is developing well but still needs some further time to reach its full potential. Deep and complex flavours of blueberry compot and minty chocolate. It has a elegant structure and and lovely freshness to the finish despite significant structure. Drink after 2010
