This new vineyard planted in 2001 by Alexandre Relvas has quite quickly established itself as one of the leading lights of the Évorian vineyards. Alexandre is
into biodiversity so amongst other living things, São Miguel is now home to… “the prettiest donkeys
EVER!â€(according to young Fiona Cameron).
Using typical Alentejo grape varieties (Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet,) and employing the expertise of Nuno Franco in the vineyard and LuÃs
Duarte in the winery, they are producing elegant freshly fruited reds......
For immediate drinking there is the vibrant “sunshine in a glass†Montinho Tinto.
The Herdade São Miguel Tinto packs a little more richness and refinement, while a more powerful and robust Reserva reveals the underlying quality of this
vineyard’s reds. There is also Montinho Branco which is made with grapes selected from more westerly vineyards where Arinto, Vital and Moscatel combine
freshness, core flavour and
grapey aromas in a seductive blend...
Herdade Sao Miguel is the wine estate which is the realisation of a dream for Alexandre Relvas. It covers around 100 hectares of Portugal’s southern
Alentejo region, and that regionality it at the heart of the wines’ style. Montinho (“Little Farmhouseâ€), which gets its name
from the traditional low-slung farmhouses (Monte) of the region, is the second wine of the estate. It features the rich, dried and roasted fruit character of the Alentejo, but
in a ripe, open knit way, with just a dash of toasty oak. The Herdade São Miguel wine has a lovely red colour, powerful nose showing sweet red berries and wood,
a fine roundness and structure with a persistent finish. Main grape varieties are Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Aragones (aka Tempranillo).
