Pazos de Lusco (Albarino)

Pazos de Lusco

Overview

Location: Rias Baixas, Galicia, Spain
Website address: www.lusco.es

Pazos de Lusco is certainly one of the top cellars for Albarino in Rias Baixas. From just 6 hectares of vines in Condado de Tea, Lusco has built up a reputation which is right at the upper tier of the best exponents of ths variety. Most of the vines were planted around the Bugallal house in the 1970s, although the property's first single estate wine was only made in 1996, when the exceptional terroir here was fully identified.

Zios Albarino

picture

Current Vintage: 2011

Succulent and beautifully defined example of this variety. From 25 year old vines, hand harvested into 15kg boxes, followed by 25 days of fermentation at 14 degrees. No malolactic. 35,000 bottles produced.

Lusco Albarino

Current Vintage: 2010

One of the Rias Baixas classics. Not flashy, but super-elegant, layered and long. It appreciates a bit of bottle age, too.

Pazo Pineiro Albarino

Current Vintage: 2010

Certainly in the top echelon of Albarinos, though some have consistently put it at the top even of that pile. Mineral-charged, this is less about being Albarino, and more about a terroir expressing itself through that variety.
