Quinta de Macedos

Quinta de Macedos

Overview

Location: Rio Torto, Douro
Website address:

Paul Reynolds bought this idyllically situated 7 Ha ancient vineyard in 1998. Set in the heart of the Torto valley (a tributary of the Douro) he uses lagares, treading and fermenting the grapes in the traditional way. The vines yield very few grapes which in turn give huge intensity to the wines.
Two different wines are made, according to the different plots.

Quinta, form the oldest vines (1926) is massive in fruit and structure but has never ending layers of flavour. The Lagar from the younger vines (1946 plantings) manages to be potent and intense with delicate tannins.

Also from this winery comes the rich and approachable Pinga do Torto (a “Drop†from the Torto) a blend of wines from Macedos vineyards, together with wine made from the grapes of two neighbouring vineyards.

Pinga do Torto

Current Vintage: 2005

The Torto, made at Paul Reynolds’ artisan Quinta de Macedos, includes a healthy proportion of barrel aged  ‘domaine’ fruit – ancient vines, trodden, with the next door neighbour’s Touriga Nacional vineyard (not oaked), from the heart of the Torto Valley.

The Torto is a tributary of the Douro and famous for producing wines of great intensity and terroir. Pinga (a drop) was created in this mold. Bottled February 2009. Drink now to 2015.

Ripe black fruits and dried herbs compose the aromas, followed by a sweet fruited and robust body.
